Certifications Needed to Work on Oil Drilling Operations

A wide range of operations are carried out on oil rigs to bring the oil down from the earth to the surface.  All those operations are considered as drilling operations. Generally a group of personnel is assigned to carry out these drilling operations. This crew is named as “drilling crew”. The crew typically consists of eight to ten in numbers depends on the contractor which includes

  • Tool pusher and tower pusher

  • Driller

  • Assistant driller

  • Subsea engineer

  • Roughnecks

  • Derrick man or motor man

  • Roustabouts

Every individual have their individual roles and responsibities but the role of driller and tool pusher are vital. This article mainly focuses on the basic certification that are needed for personnel who is working in oil drilling operations.

These are the certifications which are essential for a drilling crew, in fact all the personal working in oil rigs.

Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET):

Main objective of this certification is to specify safety issues related to offshore rigs and installations and equip the personal with the basic emergency response skills and techniques.

The course focus on:

  • Identify the common hazards in offshore oil and gas installations and the risks associated with those hazards, and to take major actions to control, reduce or eliminate those risks.

  • Providing practical knowledge on how to use safety equipments like fire fighting system and follow procedures effectively in case of emergency. Detection of hydrocarbon gases and H2S gas.

  • Demonstrate survival in sea and first aid techniques.

After demonstration BOSIET certificate will be issued to the personal on successful completion of the training. The validity of the certificate is four years.

Helicopter is the basic mode of transpiration for the personal going to offshore the aim of this certification is to provide basic survival and escape techniques in case of emergency during air journey.

This course focus on:

  • How to wear and use life jackets, Emergency Breathing System during emergency.

  • Techniques to be followed during emergency landing and handling of Distress signal equipment

International Well Control Forum (IWCF) & International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC):

IWCF certificate DetailsIADC Certificate Details

Identifying and controlling the formation pressure is major task in drilling operation. Every organization in the world looks for the competent personnel trained in well control procedures.

IWCF and IADC certifications mainly focus on well control techniques. These programs consists of two modules, one is practical Assessment Exercise and the other is written Test on surface equipment and Principles & Procedures. These Certifications provide complete standards for theoretical and practical knowledge of well control techniques.

It’s not mandatory for the entire drilling crew, Basically only needed for the rig manager, tool pusher and driller. To get a job or to get promoted as a driller one has to possess one of the above certifications.

Both the certifications are meant for well control but still there is some difference between these two course which are tabulated below.

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential or TWIC Card

It is a biometric ID card issued by Homeland Security U.S. Department which allows workers to access US waters and ports. This card is a requirement to work on drilling rigs off U.S. coast. The card is valid for five years. More details here
