Before applying for a job in oil field you should be mentally ready and prepared to say good bye to family and friends for few days, forget about 9 to 5 jobs and weekends.

There are about 900 offshore oil rigs employed worldwide which are workings 24×7. Thus, this field offers wide range of jobs with huge salaries. Some jobs may require higher educational qualification (For engineering post) while most of them require basic education or more over common sense at work.

What kind of jobs that oil rigs offer?

Most of the jobs in oil field are so specific in nature. As mentioned oil rigs offer wide range of jobs that include

  • OIM, Driller, Assistant driller, roustabouts and roughneck known as drilling crew

Basic qualification:

To make an entry in oil field education qualification has no bar. Most of the drilling companies do not require any basic education. For special jobs (like well services, chemist, geologist) engineering degree is mandatory. Other than this exploration and production companies prefer candidates with certification even without experience.

  • It’s true to some extent that most of the Exploration and Perforation organizations are reluctant to hire in experience person. This is because of many reasons.

    • Most of the applicants are not aware of the job nature till they step up in ocean

    • Personnel after trained may not be able to cope up with the marine environment

    • May not be able to adjust with this kind of shift and hard work periods

    • This situation can be overcome by getting familiar with this kind of jobs, or working in land rigs.

  • As mentioned before, certifications have more weight than educational qualification so it’s better to complete some basic certification courses (Marine courses, safety courses, rig electrician courses, mechanical equipment handling courses etc.) which are useful for working on oil rigs. Most of the companies interested in hiring workforce expect the candidates to get certified or trained before they apply.
